Brownwood ISD in a Friday afternoon school board meeting made it official naming Katy offensive coordinator Jeryl Brixey as the next head football coach at Brownwood High School. The move links two of the state’s most historic Texas High School programs in the latest move of a busy off-season of coaching changes.
Brixey has been on staff at Katy High since 2012 and on staff for three state titles in 2012, 2015 and 2020. He had a separate stint on staff at Katy from 2004-2006 where he was the offensive line coach, Brixey also was an assistant coach at Galena Park North Shore and he spent a season in the college ranks at the University of Idaho.
Coach Brixey does have head coaching experience and that experience is right down the road at Comanche High where he was the Indians head coach from 2007-2011.
Brixey takes over a Brownwood squad just two years removed from a regional final appearance, but with a young team struggled in 2024 with a 6-5 record, losing in the area playoffs. Brixey’s bigger challenge may be mending fences in a community that was divided over the decision not to renew former head coach Sammy Burnett.
