Grand Prairie ISD made it official on Wednesday naming Dallas White head coach Kenchee Ross as the next head coach at Grand Prairie High School, Coach Ross takes over for the Gophers after the sudden passing of head coach Tony Tademy in early January.
“I always felt like Grand Prairie had potential and that was the initial draw to the position, there’s great facilities and some pieces to build on. Grand Prairie has first class administration from the campus administration all the way to the GPISD athletic administration, it was a thorough process and they answered all the questions I had, I feel like they want to give a lot of support to all of athletics and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” said Ross who takes over a program that went 1-9 in 2024.
Coach Ross, a native of Terrell, played collegiately at Trinity Valley Community College and Howard Payne University. He was the quarterback at Terrell that followed after the graduation of Eric Bishop, better known to the world as Jamie Foxx.
He’s spent the last three seasons as the head coach of WT White posting an 18-15 record and leading the Longhorns to the playoffs in three straight seasons, the first time that has been accomplished in school history.
Ross, prior to being named head coach at WT White, was the school’s offensive coordinator in 2021, where his offense set a school record for points scored. Ross is probably best known as an assistant for a ten-year run on staff at Lancaster under Chris Gilbert, Coach Ross was part of the staff that led Lancaster to the 2012 state title game and also made four appearances in the regional finals. Ross has also spent time as an assistant coach at Terrell, South Oak Cliff, Dallas Carter and Greenville.
“Leaving WT White was a really tough decision, this school and community along with Dallas ISD gave me my first shot to be a head coach, I’m always going to be grateful for the opportunity and I hope I left the athletic program and school in better shape than I found it,” said Ross.
Expect Dallas ISD to post the opening at WT White immediately as the the district looks to fill their second opening this month after John Fish left Woodrow Wilson for the Frisco Heritage job.
