A successful private school coach is headed to McMurry. Sources have confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football that Bryan Brazos Christian School head coach Correy Washington will serve as the War Hawks' defensive coordinator in Abilene. The move is expected to be finalized in the coming days. Washington replaces Will Snyder, who led the McMurry defense for the last three years and will be the defensive coordinator at Howard Payne under Coby Gipson.
Washington has been a head coach in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) ranks for the past five seasons. He was 10-9 at Austin Brentwood Christian over two seasons before moving to Brazos Christian in 2022.
The Eagles finished 6-6 in his first season before improving to 7-5 in 2023. The 2024 campaign was historic for the Eagles, as they finished 12-1 and advanced to the TAPPS Division IV state championship. Washington is a member of Dave Campbell’s 40-under-40 class of 2023 and was named TAPPS Division IV Coach of the Year by Texas Private School Media last year.
Snyder is reuniting with Gipson in Brownwood, where the two were on the Yellow Jackets staff in 2018. He served as McMurry's associate head coach and defensive coordinator since 2022, inheriting a defense that allowed 33.11 points per game.
The War Hawks defense improved each season, allowing 20.9 points per game in 2023. However, Snyder’s 2024 defense dominated opponents, allowing only 11.9 points per game on their way to winning a share of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title.
