For the first time since 1992, someone other than Gary Koch will be leading the Houston Memorial Mustangs as Spring Branch ISD officially named Richmond Randle offensive coordinator Brooks Haack as the next head football coach at Memorial High School.

Haack, helped open Richmond Randle in 2021 and in four years played a key role in a building a state championship program as the Lions took home the 2024 5A-Division II state championship with a 16-0 record.

“We started from the ground up at Randle and being able to see what we built, from unloading 18-wheelers of equipment into an empty fieldhouse, starting strength and conditioning with no weights and to be a small part of building it to a state champion it’s just special. I’m just so blessed to have that opportunity, I owe so much to Coach Randle and the entire community,” said Haack.

Haack comes from a coaching background, his father Kalum Haack is a legend in Katy as he spent 26 seasons as Katy’s head softball coach and also spent 14 years coaching football. After graduating from Katy High and playing collegiately at Louisiana-Lafayette, Haack started his coaching journey as a graduate assistant at McNeese State.

In 2019, Coach Haack returned to the Houston area where he got his first high school job on staff at Richmond George Ranch. Haack also spent a year on staff at Spring Westfield before becoming the offensive coordinator at Katy Mayde Creek in 2020, in 2021 Haack came to Randle where he’s been the Lions offensive coordinator since that time.

“I was familiar with Memorial having played against them, one thing I noticed when talking to guys from there, they always talked about how much they loved it. My wife and I lived in the area and absolutely loved it as well. I am definitely following a legend, some might shy away from following Coach Koch, but I couldn’t jump at the opportunity fast enough. Going through the process and working with district and campus administration it just seemed like a perfect fit and I can’t wait to get started,” said Haack.
