As the dust settles on the winter transfer portal window, here are our 10 most impactful signings so far in the state of Texas.
1. WR Kevin Concepcion
Old team: N.C. State
New team: Texas A&M
The Aggies needed to improve at wide receiver for quarterback Marcel Reed to take the next step. Last year’s leading receiver – Noah Thomas – transferred to Georgia as Texas A&M replenished the ranks at receiver with Concepcion, Micah Hudson (maybe?) and Mario Craver. Concepcion could be a WR1 for the Aggies in 2025. He caught 49 passes for 420 yards and 6 touchdowns as a sophomore for NC State last season. All of those would’ve been team highs for Texas A&M in 2024.
2. OL Hunter Zambrano
Old team: Illinois State
New team: Texas Tech
Texas Tech went all-in with the transfer portal ahead of the 2025 season – Joey McGuire’s fourth as head coach in the 806. Improving the offensive line was at the top of the priority list for McGuire & Co. Zambrano was considered one of the best offensive linemen available in the portal. He can play guard or tackle in the Big 12. Texas Tech also added North Carolina offensive tackle Howard Sampson and Maryland’s Will Jados through the portal.
3. QB Conner Weigman
Old team: Texas A&M
New team: Houston
Houston was 133 out of 134 FBS programs in scoring offense last year with 14 points per game. Only Kent State was worse at 13.9. Willie Fritz made a change at offensive coordinator after Year 1 and gave new play caller Slade Nagle a potential star at quarterback in Weigman, a former five-star recruit who couldn’t stay healthy in his time at Texas A&M. Talent isn’t an issue for Weigman. Maybe a return home to the Houston area and a fresh start help Weigman reach his potential.
4. WR Jordan Dwyer
Old team: Idaho
New team: TCU
TCU could be a dark horse candidate to win the Big 12 in 2025 if the Horned Frogs find a running game and replace some talented wide receivers in Savion Williams and Jack Bech. One player who could fill those shoes is Dwyer, a productive slot receiver who caught 78 passes for 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. Wide receivers tend to handle the jump up in competition with ease. Expect Dwyer to be a consistent target for quarterback Josh Hoover.
5. OL Addison Nichols
Old team: Arkansas
New team: SMU
The Mustangs enjoy adding offensive and defensive linemen with Power Four pedigree through the transfer portal and Nichols is the latest example. He’s an interior offensive lineman who started 8 games for Arkansas as a redshirt freshman in 2024. He played in 12 games as a reserve for the Tennessee Volunteers a year before. He can play guard or center for SMU.
6. WR Kobe Prentice
Old team: Alabama
New team: Baylor
Baylor could field one of the more explosive offenses in the country next year thanks to the return of quarterback Sawyer Robertson, wide receiver Josh Cameron, and running back Bryson Washington. Prentice is a top-level athlete who could reach his ceiling under second year offensive coordinator Jake Spavital. Loading up on weapons for Robertson was a priority in the offseason for a Bears squad with high hopes in 2025.
7. QB Malachi Nelson
Old team: Boise State
New team: UTEP
Scotty Walden is building a reputation as an ace recruiter as head coach of the Miners. He’s signed the highest-rated prep class in Conference USA in back-to-back cycles and added a former five-star recruit in Nelson to jumpstart the offense in 2025. UTEP went 3-2 in its final five games against Conference USA opponents.
8. QB Mabrey Mettauer
Old team: Wisconsin
New team: Sam Houston
New head coach Phil Longo brought a quarterback with him to Sam Houston in Mettauer, a former pupil at Wisconsin. He was a four-star recruit in the 2024 class at The Woodlands in the nearby Houston area before signing with Longo and the Badgers when Longo was the offensive coordinator in Madison. Kickstarting your tenure with a legit stud at quarterback is an ace in the hole for the Bearkats.
9. DL Lee Hunter
Old team: UCF
New team: Texas Tech
The trenches were clearly a priority in West Texas. We spoke about the offensive line additions earlier in the Zambrano section. The defensive line also improved with players like Hunter and edge Romello Height (Georgia Tech) arriving at Texas Tech. Lee was a beast in the Big 12 at UCF and gives the Red Raiders a real game-changer on the interior of the defensive line. Height could be that on the edge for a Texas Tech squad that lacked a pass rusher over the last two seasons.
10. CB Julian Humphrey
Old team: Georgia
New team: Texas A&M
Texas A&M struggled against quality passing offenses last season in Year 1 under Mike Elko. The former safeties coach won’t abide by that type of production, so he’s bolstered the staff and the defensive back room over the offseason. One of those additions is Humphrey, a former blue chip recruit who signed with the Bulldogs out of Clear Lake High School in Houston.
Other notable signings: DL Cole Brevard (Texas), QB Walker White (Baylor), S Will Jones (North Texas), QB Reese Poffenbarger (North Texas), LB Brandon Tucker (UTSA), Edge Kaian Roberts-Day (UTSA), WR Tyrin Smith (Texas State), QB Gevani McCoy (Texas State), Edge Romello Height (Texas Tech), WR Mario Craver (Texas A&M)
