Reports suggest Florida co-defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong is expected to become the new defensive coordinator. The 31-year-old Armstrong was the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss prior to spending the last two seasons in Gainesville. The Gators were 62nd in scoring defense while allowing 24.3 points per game.

Houston fielded one of the best defenses in the Big 12 in 2024 despite struggling to a four-win season. The Cougars were 47th nationally in scoring defense after allowing 22.9 points per game. They needed to find a new defensive coordinator because Texas Tech hired away Sheil Wood to the same position earlier in the month.

Houston also replaced its offensive coordinator as Willie Fritz heads into Year 2 in Third Ward.
