Angleton (13-1) vs. Smithson Valley (12-2), 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Waco’s McLane Stadium:
Angleton will be looking for its first state title appearance since 1958 as the Wildcats try to topple Smithson Valley, a team that played for the state championship a year ago.
Last week, Angleton avenged its only loss of the season as it knocked off La Porte, 24-21, in a game that can best be described as a “rock fight.” Both teams love physical football and they knew each other well, so it was a real old school showdown.
RB JaMarcus Schockley had a touchdown run and sophomore WR Wesley Jackson hauled in a touchdown pass from Bryce Duron to lead the Wildcats offense. However, the star of the night was the Angleton defense, which shut La Porte down in the second half. Kicker Ivan Rodriguez also drilled three field goals and an extra point to help the Wildcats to the close win.
Smithson Valley barely broke a sweat last week by drilling Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, 49-14. SVHS QB Cade Spradling threw for 110 yards and two scores. He ran for 105 yards and two scores and, just for good measure, had an 84-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The Rangers feasted on Flour Bluff mistakes, picking off three passes with two being returned for touchdowns.
Smithson Valley loves a physical smash-mouth style, so this one won’t be for the faint of heart. It’s a total coin flip game. On paper these two look evenly matched, but I’ll give the edge to Angleton based on team speed across the board.
