The Trinity Tigers kept its hopes for a fourth consecutive Southern Athletic Association championship with a 38-35 overtime victory over the preseason favorite Berry Vikings. Tyler Huettel (McKinney) nailed a 33-yard field goal in the first overtime to start the Tigers celebration.
The Tigers will be fans of Berry next week when the Vikings meet Centre in a critical contest for the SAA title. Centre defeated Trinity 24-12 on the first Saturday in October. The Colonels defeated Southwestern 38-28 earlier in the day to remain undefeated against SAA teams.
A Centre win at Berry next week would give the Colonels the tiebreaker edge over the following three teams in the standings: Trinity, Berry, and Millsaps.
The contest between the Tigers and Vikings featured nine lead changes, including five in the second half. Berry converted a two-point conversion following its first touchdown in the first quarter, and it appeared that decision would be the difference in the contest until BJ Rainey blocked the Viking's extra point attempt after Berry tied the game at 35 with 9:11 remaining in regulation.
Huettel nearly sent the Tigers to victory in regulation, but his 57-yard field goal attempt as time expired sailed wide left. However, the two-time All-American didn’t miss his next opportunity to seal the win.
Berry opened the extra session with the ball, but Quenton Joseph (Richmond Foster) intercepted a pass by the Vikings during their second play from scrimmage in overtime. Trinity ran the ball twice for nine yards before sending Huettel on the field on third down and one. Berry’s attempt to ice the senior kicker with a timeout before the kick was for naught.
Two of Trinity’s final three contests are on the road, beginning with a trip to Hendrix next week before hosting rival Southwestern. The Tigers conclude the season against Millsaps in a game that could determine who earns a share of the SAA title and possibly the conference’s automatic bid to the playoffs.
