The 2024 Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament descends upon College Station this weekend, with 128 teams from across the Lone Star State vying for passing league glory. Every team's got a story — DCTF's Carter Yates and Greg Tepper identify seven teams they'll have their eye on down in the Brazos Valley.

DIVISION I

Pflugerville Weiss
The Wolves went 9–2 last season and look more loaded this year. Quarterback Jax Brown is an FBS prospect who threw for over 3,000 yards and 33 touchdowns, earning District Co-Offensive MVP. His primary target is four-star Arizona State commit Adrian Wilson coming off a 1,000 yard season. But don’t mistake Pflugerville Weiss as one dimensional. The defense is headlined by three-star corner Jason Stokes Jr.

DeSoto
Of course there will be eyes on the Eagles, who are two-time defending 6A Division II state champs and start the year No. 1 in Texas Football's preseason 6A rankings. But it's more than just "come watch a great team" — there are big questions to answer specifically at quarterback, where rock-solid leader DJ Bailey is off to Sam Houston, leaving a void under center. There's tons of playmakers here like Tiger Riden, Daylon Singleton and Boobie Feaster, but all eyes will be on the trigger-man for DeSoto, a position that could shape the entirety of Class 6A in the fall.

Wichita Falls Memorial
For the first time ever, a team will play a State 7-on-7 game before playing their first varsity game. Memorial is one of two new high schools in Wichita Falls (along with Wichita Falls Legacy), created by the consolidation of Wichita Falls, Rider and Hirschi. But the Mavericks are far from some fledgling program — towering quarterback Joe Castles and reigning district MVP Kenji Johnson give them plenty of pop, and their defense was exceptional in qualifying play. They're a mystery, but the Mavericks could end up being the talk of the tournament.

DIVISION II

Frisco Panther Creek
The Panthers have rotated quarterbacks this spring, but whoever’s leading the offense has a plethora of weapons to throw to. Lovejoy transfer Jalen Lott is the biggest recruit with 36 offers, while Cristian Trickett is the returning leader with just under 1,400 yards and 24 TD. Safety Donovan Webb is a ballhawk in center field, while 2025 RB Sentel Simpson is a mismatch with linebackers in coverage.

Sinton
The Pirates are in their first-ever State 7-on-7 tournament, but don't let their relative rookie status lull you to sleep. Quarterback Triston Handson is a rising star on the Coastal Bend, and he's got tons of weapons around him including running back Derek Garcia and receiver Jacoby James. The defense is sound as well, with defensive back Andrew Silva — who was co-district defensive newcomer of the year last season — taking the reins of the secondary. There's a buzz around Sinton for the fall, and it'll hit a fever pitch if they perform well in College Station.

DIVISION III

Daingerfield
Aeryn Hampton’s off to Alabama, but the Tigers have plenty of starpower returning. Rising junior wide receiver Mason Williams is 6-foot-4 with early offers to Miami and UTSA. This weekend could be a coming out party for him. Ashton Williams rushed for over 1,200 yards as a sophomore and has a UTEP offer. Rising senior quarterback Chase Johnson is the District Offensive MVP who makes it all go.

Alpine
It's more than 700 miles as the crow flies from the Big Bend burgh of Alpine to College Station, but the Bucks are coming ready to make some noise. Quarterback Devon Rojo has taken the next step in his development after a promising junior year, and the veteran playmakers around him, especially Swiss army knife Iden Lujan, will make them a tough out. The state tournament is a step up in competition and the travel is a huge burden, but if the Bucks can put those external factors aside, they could turn heads.
