Starting in 2025, Texas high school athletics will have a new face of the franchise.

University Interscholastic League executive director Dr. Charles Breithaupt announced Tuesday that the 2024-25 school year will be his final one at the helm of Texas' governing body, concluding a 33-year run at the UIL.

A state champion basketball coach at Hardin-Jefferson and a legend at his alma mater of Buna, Breithaput joined the UIL in 1992 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming athletic director in 1995 and associate director in 2004. It was in February 2009 that Breithaupt was appointed as seventh executive director in league history, taking over for Dr. Bill Farney.

From a Texas high school football perspective, Breithaupt's tenure will likely be remembered as a time of tremendous change. From instituting split divisions within classifications to catch up with the state's rapid growth, to increased safety measures to mitigate the risk of concussions, to the allowance of live-streaming games to allow more access to the sport, to the touch-and-go navigation of a season through the COVID-19 pandemic, Breithaupt has overseen the transformation of the sport in many ways.

During his tenure, Breithaupt has also overseen the improvement of the relationship between the UIL and the Texas High School Coaches Association, turning a sometimes-fraught partnership into a more unified one.
