Northside ISD announced on Thursday afternoon the hiring of San Antonio Harlan defensive coordinator Kemmie Lewis as the next head football coach at San Antonio Brandeis.

He'll replace Charles Bruce, who was named assistant athletic director at Northside ISD in April.

Lewis has spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Harlan where the Hawks have gone 22-4 the past two seasons, including a 12-1 mark in 2023.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead Brandeis," Lewis said. "It feels surreal that I was selected to be the head coach at this program and be part of the community and do great things,” Lewis said.

Coach Lewis is best known for his stint at San Antonio Memorial where he served as the Minutemen’s head coach from 2016-2021. He was named Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Class 5A Coach of the Year in 2017 after leading MHS to their first district title in school history with a 7-4 record and just Memorial’s second playoff appearance in school history.

San Antonio Memorial has won just one game in the previous two seasons combined.

Lewis takes over a Brandeis program that is among the best in San Antonio.

“Brandeis is a premier school in Northside ISD and in the area," he said. "It felt like a no brainer for me to go after it, great kids and community, tons of support in the community and from the district.”

Lewis will begin on the job at Brandeis on Friday and he’ll be quite busy from the start.

“Top priority is to get to know the kids, but I’ve got to meet with the coaches and see which coaches are staying or moving on, build out the coaching staff and build the relationships with the players," Lewis said.
